LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Published: May 28, 2012 • By: Lloyd Green Jr, Editor

Dear Editor,

We would like to thank the community for its support and participation in this year’s Virginia Read selection, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Bringing community together around a literary work to encourage reading and understanding, not just of the book itself, but of each other, is part of the VYCR vision. The conversations and ideas generated by those of you who were able to join us on April 28th for the book discussion, exhibits, music, and the movie, enrich our community.

We are particularly appreciative of two key partnerships this year: the Colusa County Arts Council and their “At Home” black-and-white photography exhibit, and the Sacramento Valley Museum, which brought to life “Colusa in the 1930s,” on display at 735 Main Street during our Virginia Read Day celebration.

We are deeply grateful to the following businesses and individuals whose generosity and donations have made this year’s events possible and enable us to build towards Virginia Read Day 2013: Peter Brennan and Sons, Jon and Juliann Cheney, Emily and Sara Conrado, Colusa County Arts Council, Jim and Marilyn Davison, Bernice Dommer, Elvira G. Photography, Jon and Roberta James, Dr. Richard Johnson, Ray and Donna Krause, Jim and Billie Mark, Jim and Carol Miller, Sacramento Valley Museum, Barbara and Dan O’Connell, Leo and Cindy Steidlmayer, Dale and Peggy Townzen, John and Diane Vafis, Larry and Kandy Yeghoian, Charles and Elizabeth Yerxa, and Woody and Kathy Yerxa.

Many of you have participated in our online event, YOUR STORIES, and have submitted your own stories of how your families, like the Joads, migrated to California. These stories are posted on the virginiaread.net website, and we encourage others to add their stories over the summer. Please stay in touch, and send us your comments and suggestions for the next selection at virginiaread@me.com.

With thanks,

The Virginia Yerxa
Community Read Committee
