Williams Basketball Week 2

Published: September 26, 2011 • By: Lloyd Green Jr, Editor

In this week’s Williams Basketball, all the favorite teams won, however a couple of the games looked like major upsets in the making until the end.

CalFoods Hooisers 55, La Fortuna 38
CalFoods Hoosiers, the reigning champions from the winter season were losing with about ten minutes to go in the game   La Fortuna, a sharp shooting outside team was on the verge of a major upset if they could hold a margin, even if but one point at 33-32.  However the Hoosiers were able to go off on an 18-4 run made of three pointers and breakways toward the end of the second half that was decisive.  Martin Corona led CalFoods with 15 points and Hugo Pineda and Andrew Dyett had 9 points to lead La Fortuna.

H&R Block Savages 53, Vann Bros. Young Gunz 27
The Young Gunz were surprising the established Savages finding themselves tied with H&R Block at about the 11 minute mark in the opening half.  But then, H&R went on a 12-2 run to close the half up 25-13.  The second half went in a similar pattern, as H&R went on a 16-2 run to put the game up by a margin of 21 points and out of reach.  T.J. Ellison led all scorers with 22 points and Alvaro Pino and John Velasquez led the Young Gunz with 8 points.

Swat 72, M&K Harvesting Fuzz 30
M&K Harvesting, a new team, was still sorting itself in its second game as Swat went about their work of racking up a lot of point from both long range and on fast breaks.  Swat jumped out to an 11 point early lead and built it to a 35-13 margin at the half.  The second half was more of the same with Swat outscoring the Fuzz 37-17.  David Tapia led Swat with 21 points and Daryl Shakelford led the Fuzz with 13 points.

Fouch & Sons Redskins  48, Alsco-Geyer Bulls 43
The Redskins broke out setting the pace of the game and went up 24-10.  However from the tail end of the first half to the middle of the second half the Bulls went on an 18-4 run to tie the Redskins at 28.  From there it was a seesaw battle with the leading changing six time of the course of several minutes.  But with less than two minutes to go the Bulls had the ball and a one point deficit and took several long range shots, but to no avail.  Then the Redskins closed out with several key inside baskets to pull out the win by 5 points.   David Basset of the Redskins led his team with 13 points and Ismael Rodriguez and Jerry Vega led the balanced scoring Bulls with 9 points.
