Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014 (“Choice Act”)
During the last couple of weeks many of Colusa County veterans whom are enrolled in the VA health care system are receiving their choice card in the mail. They also got an information sheet showing the facts about this card. Please read this flier and please know what the choice card is not:
First and foremost it’s not something you can use whenever you want. You must get pre-approved by the VA to use this. The number to call is 866-606-8198.
You must meet the eligibility criteria that you have been set by the VA:
- You must wait more than 30 days for an appointment.
- Your current address is more than 40 miles from the closest VA medical facility.
- You need to travel by plane or boat to get to a VA medical facility.
Does a geographic challenge, such as extensive distances around water or other geologic formations, such as mountains present a significant travel hardship to the veteran getting to the VA medical facility?
If the veteran meets one of these criteria they must call 866-606-8198 to verify eligibility.
Remember this is not a fee-basis card and you must get pre-approved to use it. If you use it without pre approval you may and mostly likely have to pay for it yourself.
Remember, the Colusa County Veteran Services office is here to serve veterans and their dependents. There are many state and federal benefits available to veterans and their dependents that they have earned.
