Eight Colusa County non-profit groups were named as the 2015 Premier Mushroom Inc. Grant recipients.
Representatives from each of the groups accepted the awards on February 5, 2016, during the 5th annual Grant Awards Breakfast hosted at the Colusa Business & Visitor Center by Premier Mushrooms Inc. Premier Mushroom chief financial officer Chris Krebs announced this year’s winners.
The awardees which included the Colusa County Food Basket Association, Safe Haven Drop-In Center, Colusa County Free Library Literacy Program, Colusa High School Music Boosters, Pierce Band Department, Arbuckle-College City Volunteer Fire Department, Natural Resource Conservation District (Colusa County Grown project) and the Eleanor Azevedo Memorial Fund Youth Empowerment Service (Y.E.S.).
For the past five seasons, Premier Mushrooms Inc. has partnered with the Colusa County Chamber of Commerce to provide their locally grown mushrooms for sale at the Colusa Farmers Market. This year they added a second sale location when they were also available once weekly at Market Street Grill. One hundred percent of the mushroom sale proceeds benefit the grant fund which is designated for distribution among selected non-profit applicants.
Farmers Market manager Jennifer Diaz and Market Street Grill owner Diane Schuman also attended the breakfast where they were each recognized for their help in making this such a successful grant program this year.
Every Colusa County-based non-profit group is eligible to apply for the grants.
Premier Mushroom Inc. CEO John Ashbaugh has previously stated that he and the mushroom farm are pleased to be a part of the Colusa County community. “We believe it is important to businesses here to give back to our community,” he said adding that the grant program is one way that Premier can do that.
During the awards presentation, Krebs echoed Ashbaugh’s sentiments and added that he was pleased to be in the company of so many people who continue to serve others.
This year’s grant recipient brought a variety of projects for consideration.
The Pierce Band will use its award to purchase an online music service subscription which will enable students to have access to quality music for a fraction of the cost of buying individual pieces of music.
The Arbuckle-College City Volunteer Firefighters’ grant will assist in the continuation of its annual fire prevention class and tour for students and families.
Funding received for the Colusa County Grown project will be used for purchasing food and supplies for a CCG dinner for potential supporters of the CCG program.
The Y.E.S. program provides assistance to those facing difficulties providing the funds needed to involve their children in local youth self-enrichment activities.
Colusa High School Friends of Music award will help with expenses to send two CHS band members to New York City to perform as members of the American Honors Performance Series Concert Band at Carnegie Hall. Band members Josh Arce and Alec Schantz were selected from more than 18,000 high school musicians worldwide who submitted audition tapes.
Safe Haven Drop-In Center’s award will provide funding for the Center’s continued effort to bring awareness about mental health and reduce stigma within the community through various outreach efforts. Safe Haven is a peer-supported center for individuals who are in recovery, in need of assistance, or looking to avoid isolation.
The Colusa County Food Basket Association was awarded funds to help with the continuation of its project which provides more than 400 food baskets to Colusa County families at Christmas time.
The Colusa County Free Library’s Literacy Program award will benefit the new teen literacy program, the “Great Stories Club.”
