Arts Council Showcases Fabric Artists

The Colusa County Arts Council is currently showcasing the works of two fiber artists during the month of March and April.

The quilted designs are the works of Louise Schiele and Patt Bagdon.

Schiele has worked with fiber for over fifty years and continued to create one of a kind fiber art in her home studio. Using her computer, Schiele scans old photographs and prints onto the fabric where then she plunges her sewing needle into the fabric creating one of a kind piece of art.

“My ‘Buried Deep’ series of work came from finding a box of old photographs in an old truck in my mom’s garage,” said Schiele, “It was a waste to hide these treasures, so I scanned a few into the computer and printed them onto cotton fabric.”

Schiele then takes the photographs and colors them with pencils and begins the creative process.

“The process is long, and the steps to my final product take time, but it’s all worth it in the end,” she said.

As for Bagdon, she commented that her art helps keep her curious.

“I love playing with fabric and surface design,” said Bagdon.

Bagdon commented that she had a bit of a romantic heart and created a series of Italian landscape quilts, and she loves the rhythm of hip hop and enjoys the strong patterning of her inspiration.

“The process of putting it all together – the design, the stitch, the technique – is all humbling,” said Bagdon, “Each time I create a piece, I realize how much more I have to process.”

“My mottos, in common with the Starship Enterprise, is to be bold and eventually I will explore where no place has gone before,” said Bagdon.

The works of both Schiele and Bagdon are displayed at the Colusa County Arts Council, 430 Market Street, and are available to the public Wednesday through Friday, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and on Saturday, from 11:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
