After managing their threading salon for several years in the Yuba City Mall, Avarinder and Talwinder Singh recently opened ‘Art of Shapes’ an Eyebrow Salon in Downtown Colusa.
Located at 613 Market Street, Art of Shapes specializes in eyebrow shaping and the removal of unwanted facial hair by threading.
Threading is done by a trained and experienced individual using a cotton string to remove hairs from the brow area or other parts of the face such as the chin and upper lip.
While threading is a somewhat new trend in the western world, it is an ancient technique of facial hair removal that is believed to have originated in Asia.
While operating their store in Yuba City, the Singhs received requests from clients to open a salon in Colusa County.
“Many of our customers were driving long distances for threading, and we felt confident that we could provide those services closer to where they live,” said Singh, “we wanted it to be more convenient for our existing clients, and we’re looking forward to meeting new customers from the community.”
Threading can remove facial hair very quickly with precision. An average threading session like eyebrow shaping takes about ten minutes. Full facial hair removal takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
The process begins with a strand of sterilized, organic cotton thread that is doubled, twisted and then rolled across the areas of unwanted hair.
According to Singh, threading is an effective alternative to waxing and tweezing facial hair and results in much less skin irritation. Threading involves no chemicals and does not remove a layer of skin like waxing.
Levels of discomfort vary but are often described as less painful than both tweezing and waxing.
The Art of Shape’s downtown location allows customers to walk-in for services during their lunch break or in between errands without an appointment, since it is performed so quickly.
“We are seeing an increase in clients coming in for services without an appointment during late mornings and early afternoons. Our customers can drop in when it is convenient for them,” said Singh.
New customers are encouraged to bring in the printed advertisement in the Williams Pioneer Review to receive a special discount. It was the discount that motivated Barbara Johnson, of Colusa, to take advantage of the opportunity.
Although new to the salon, this was not her first experience with threading. Johnson stated, “It’s been a few years since I had it done, but I liked the results. I stopped going because it was in Yuba City and it was hard to get over there on a regular basis.”
