Two of Colusa County’s top junior high school spellers will compete in the State Junior High Spelling Championship, Saturday, May 14, 2016.

Elena Kalfsbeek, an eighth-grade student at Johnson Junior High School, took first place in the Colusa County Junior High School Spelling Contest on March 10, 2016, and Eduardo Hernandez, a seventh-grade student, also at Johnson Junior High School was runner-up.  Both students now advance to the State competition.

Colusa County Superintendent of Schools, Michael West, was Emcee, and Colusa County Board of Education Trustee, Ed Conrado was the Spelling Master for the hour-long written contest.

The event, which was comprised of eight competitors and 22 words, finally ended after Elena correctly spelled “luminous.”

“This was a good group of spellers,” Mr. West observed. “After it was obvious that the event was going to last a long time Mr. Conrado was forced to skip words on the test list to get to a harder group of words.  Even still, the group continued to spell correctly many more challenging words.”

Both Elena and Eduardo are seasoned spelling competitors, having both participated twice before in elementary and junior high competitions.

“I expect with their level of experience in both styles of competition (the elementary event is a spoken test) they can both go far in the State event,” West said.

The public is invited to the junior high spelling event at Miller Creek School, in San Rafael, California.  For further information, contact Tina Maxwell at 458-0350, ext. 10354, or tmaxwell@ccoe.net.
