Velazquez Awarded Albert J. Duarte Memorial Future/Futuro Scholarship

Velazquez, Yasmin_ppYasmin Velazquez, of Arbuckle, has been awarded for the 2016-17 year, a scholarship from the Jose Cruz Duarte Family in partnership with, a public benefit e-learning corporation.

Yasmin will receive a cash award of $2,000 for her freshmen year of college study.

The Albert J. Duarte Memorial Future/ Futuro Scholarship is awarded to Senior Pierce High School class members of Hispanic/Latino heritage on a competitive basis of high scholarship, school/community leadership and service, and promise of future contributions to their community.

Yasmin is the daughter of Araceli and Juan Manuel Velazquez,

An honors student at Pierce HIgh School planning to major in kinesiology and sports medicine at California State University, Sacramento. Yasmin is a Distinguished Dozen Member (Sophomore, Junior, Senior); Future Farmers of America Field Day Committee (Sophomore, Junior, Senior) and a member of the Float Building Committee (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior). Yasmin has been all league in track and soccer.

Yasmin is a qualified graduate of Pierce High School for 2016, and she will be the first in her family to attend college.

Yasmin plans to attend Sacramento State University, major in Kinesiology with a focus in physical therapy., founded by Joseph N. Velasquez, a graduate of Pierce High School, Class of ‘75’, is an e-learning educational initiative that helps Latino public high school students to develop effective study and learning habits, skills and strategies and prepares them and their families to make informed decisions about college. The Albert J. Duarte Memorial Future/ Futuro Scholarship represents the first annual scholarship honoring the memory Albert J. Duarte, first graduating class of Pierce High School, Class of ‘38’. Albert’s legacy of his humble nature, strength, and pride in the pursuit of excellence.

Yasmin, a Pierce High School student (Class 2016) of Latino/Hispanic heritage is awarded the scholarship on the basis of high scholarship, exemplary character and the strength of her application submission.
