Employees at the Sun Valley Rice Company hoped to make Christmas a little extra special for struggling families in Colusa County.

The company annually participates in the Colusa County Food Basket project by donating 200 bags of rice while Employees individually participate in a can food drive.

“We have a competition to see who can get the most pounds of food donated.”  Said Barbara Gomes, Sun Valley Rice Spokesperson.

Juanita Smith and Margaret Morris of Colusa formed the Colusa County Food Basket Association nearly 15 years ago. The project has provided baskets of groceries to thousands of families during the holiday season.

“We wanted to make a bigger impact, other than the food drive.” Said Gomes, “our Angels program extends that reach.”

For the last few years, the staff at the Sun Valley Rice Company sponsored just three families. Each employee donated gifts and gift cards.  Yet that didn’t seem to be enough commented Gomes.

“This year we have decided to sponsor 10 Colusa County Foster Children” said Gomes. “One of our employees kids was a foster child, we wanted to help make Christmas special for a foster child.”

Employees, or “Angels”, gathered up age appropriate gifts wrapped them up and held a special gathering for the Children.

“It is what Christmas is all about.” Said Gomes, “helping others in need, most importantly the children.”
