The Maxwell American Legion Auxiliary Post 218 recently sponsored an essay contest in the Maxwell Unified School District. The students were given a patriotic topic to write about and specific rules to follow. The winners of the contest were Karsyn Gwinnup, Morgan Dennis, and Jillian Wilson. Several of the winners will move on to a higher level of the contest.

Earlier in the year, the American Legion Auxiliary also put new American flags in each of the classrooms in Maxwell Unified School District. Students discovered the importance of Veteran’s Day and also learned the correct way to retire an American flag.

The auxiliary is looking forward to working with the school district in the future to promote patriotism in their schools. ■
