Scores of local barbecue enthusiasts and community members attended the Citizens for a Better Williams’ Badge Challenge Rib Cook-off that benefited the Williams Police K9 Unit.
On Thursday, August 11, six local teams gathered at Venice Park in Williams as they smoked, barbecued, dry rubbed, and sauced over 180 racks of ribs.
“I was very pleased with the turnout,” said Citizens for a Better Williams President, Pat Ash, “I feel like the community never lets us down – they are always there for us, and this was no exception.”
Ash commented that people turned up from all over the county, many came for the bbq feast; others came out to help the Williams K9 Unit.
Jim Saso with Team 2nQUE commented that the K9 Unit is a valuable tool for not only the city but the county.
“Research has shown that a K9 unit is essential to the police force,” said Saso.
As community members enjoyed their meals, the judges had a difficult time selecting the top three.
“It was a tough call,” said Jerry Maltby, one of the judges for the event, “There wasn’t a bad rib in the house.”
Following an evening of music by ‘The Hot Rods’, and a small car show from the ‘Magwinders Car Club’, the winner was announced.
Team 2nQue took first place for their backyard style ribs.
“We did something a little different than what we do at competitions,” said Saso, “We tried to something more of a backyard style.”
Saso wouldn’t give up his trade secret, and rightfully so, his team 2nQue has traveled throughout the region competing at dozens of barbecue challenges and has taken many top awards at the events.
Team Blue Line BBQ (the Colusa County Sheriff’s Deputy Association), prepared a long smoked rib with almond wood.
“We smoked the ribs for about four and a half hours,” said Blue Line BBQ cook, Neil Cotter, “Our secret was the almond wood.”
For Cotter, he received the BBQ bug after competing in the Western Days Cook-off a few years ago.
“We have since competed in a competition in Meridian, at the Colusa Casino Rib/Tri-tip Cook-off,” said Cotter.
Team Defensor Fortis took third place with their Kalua style ribs.
“It is our take on Kalua pork,” said team cook Scott Noble, “We smoked the ribs for a bit, then wrapped them in banana leafs and finished them off with a good rib sauce.”
Noble commented that they had a couple of comment on the ribs, reminding them of home.
“That comment alone was worth more than the prize,” said Noble.
Other teams include the Williams Firefighters Association with their three spiced ribs; the Colusa Rural Firefighters Association and their sweet and spicy ribs; and the Williams K9 Association where team cook Jake Parker commented that they cooked their ribs ‘low and slow’ with a dry rub and sauce at the end.
People’s choice was chosen by a crowd cheer for their favorite. The people’s choice was awarded to the Williams Firefighters Association.
Williams Police Officers Association President, Daniel Mata thanked everyone for attending and extended his gratitude to the Citizens for a Better Williams for hosting the fundraising event. Additionally, Mata presented Officer Ivan Maldonado with his 10 Years of Service certificate. He also wished Maldonado best wishes on his career endeavor as he moved on to another opportunity.
The evening concluded with a K9 Demonstration with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, and the Williams City Police Department; and the Citizens for a Better Williams presented the Williams K9 Association with a $5,000 donation that included the proceeds from the evening and a general donation.
“When the Chief of Police came to us and asked for help, as their K9 Association didn’t have enough funding to purchase and train the K9, we decided to step up and help,” said Ash.
Ash commented that the group is looking to host a similar event next year. <
“Last year we helped the fire department with the restoration of their antique fire engine, and this year we decided to help the police department – let us see what next year brings,” said Ash.
