Enjoying home court advantage on Sept. 6, the Colusa Redhawks (11-10) defeated the Esparto Spartans (3-7) in a 3 sets.
The Redhawks were both strong defensively and offensively against the Spartans, with an opening set score of 25-8. Not much would change as Colusa went on to capture a quick second set win with a score of 25-7. Colusa clinched a win with a third set score of 25-13 and added another win to their 11-10 record. The RedHawks had an impressive 30 team aces in the match.
“We were missing a lot of girls for this game. Three were gone on a school trip and two are out with injuries. We all had to play new and different positions on the spot. Given the changes, we played well. Sometimes games like this can hurt a team, but I think it only made us stronger and we came out with the win,” said Abby Huskey after Tuesday nights match-up.
Huskey was a force to be reckoned with behind the service line as she dished out 13 aces. Estefania Orozco added 7 aces to the team total while Lexi Ramos nailed 5 kills. Helena Harris aided to the win with 9 assists and 4 aces.
With the win over Esparto, the Redhawks traveled to East Nicolaus (5-0) Thursday, Sept. 22. Down two players to injuries, the Redhawks made several adjustments on the court, but fell short to the Spartans in the first set 16-25. Pumped up and ready to volley, the Redhawks answered right back and took the second set win, 25-13. The undefeated Spartans would come alive in the third and fourth sets, finalizing a win with scores of 25-12 and 25-16.
“East Nic played very well. We will need to work on teamwork. Our defense was a little rough due to some injuries. It’s difficult to practice when parts of your team are unavailable to practice. After tonight, we should be almost back to a full squad. We were missing an outside hitter due to an injury from the Los Molinos tournament. We will need to work hard without her and look forward to having the whole team back together,” said Coach Tina Lyons.
Lexi Ramos landed 4 kills and 12 successful digs, Abby Huskey served up 4 aces and 8 digs, and Caitlin Vaca played a great offensive game with 9 kills.
