Big rig crash temporarily closes I-5 in Arbuckle

Two big rigs collided on Interstate 5 in Arbuckle on Friday afternoon, closing the highway for several hours.

The crash reported at 1:45 PM, occurred just south of the Hall Street Bridge on Interstate 5.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2009 freight-liner driven by Phillip Willadsen, 47 of Orland, was attempting to drive through a curve in the roadway and subsequently lost control of his vehicle.

“This caused his vehicle to collide into the concrete center divide and block both northbound lanes,” said Shane Roach, Williams Area CHP public information officer.

With Willadsen’s vehicle blocking both northbound lanes, a 2012 Peterbilt Semi truck, driven by Jeffery Fields, 44 of Fortuna, CA, collided with Willadsen.

“Fields also applied his brakes but was unable to avoid a collision with Willadsen,” said Roach.

CalTrans assisted with the closure of the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 and diverted traffic onto Hillgate Rd. through Arbuckle onto Freeway Underpass Rd. All northbound lanes were reopened at approximately 5 PM.

Willadsen was transported by Enloe Ambulance to Glenn Medical Center for lacerations to his head. Fields sustained no injuries.
