For the past nine years, Richard Sanapaw has called Maxwell, home
“It’s like being back home in one of the neighborhoods I grew up in,” he said.
Born and raised in Shawano, WI at Menominee Indian Reservation, Sanapaw graduated from Menominee High School in 2003. He then attended college at CMN, College of Menominee Nation.
“After college, I started working at our family business, M&J’s Restaurant, off and on,” he said.
At the age of 21, Sanapaw came to California to visit his brother in Colusa.
“I had family out here so I came for a visit,” said Sanapaw.
That very visit would end up changing his life.
In 2007, Sanapaw moved to Maxwell where he and his wife, Christine married in 2009. The couple havee three children: Alexia, Elizabeth and Aiden.
Sanapaw, who studied Culinary Arts, is the primary chef at Rocco’s Bar & Grill in Colusa.
“I started at Rocco’s from the first day they opened up. I am the only cook that has been there since day one,” said Sanapaw.
In June of 2015, Sanapaw was apart of the winning team at the Colusa County Fair’s Chef Challenge.
“It was a lot of fun and great honor to take first place for Rocco’s,” he said.
As for Sanapaw’s favorite Maxwell event, he said would have to be the new Maxwell Country Christmas.
