March is Human Kindness month

The Colusa County Office of Education is asking the community to come together during the month of March to spread some love and human kindness by donating to another good cause.

This month, the county office is collecting canned food and blankets for Colusa County’s homeless and needy families.

The food and blanket drive follows last month’s initiative to support the Colusa County Animal Shelter.

Both events are new for the Office of Education, and came about during a brainstorming session in December, said Assistant Superintendent, Julie Tucker.

“We wanted to support critters and families in Colusa County,” she said.

It might be hard to imagine homelessness or hunger in Colusa County, but it does exist, county educators learned when they contacted the Behavioral Health department.

The food and blankets the Office of Education collects will be turned over to Safe Haven at the end of the month, Tucker said.

Safe Haven is a drop-in center located in Colusa that provides a safe place for people to share and learn skills on how to handle mental health challenges.

The facility provides meals, some clothing, and laundry facility for visitors.

Tucker said the community can drop off non-perishable food and blankets from 8 AM to 4 PM at the Colusa County Office of Education, 345 Fifth St., Colusa.
