Children’s Services Council meets with Senator Nielsen

Colusa County Office of Education Superintendent Mike West and the CCOE Children’s Services Policy Council visited the state capitol and met with Senator Nielsen last Thursday.

“The group talked about child care issues, child development, and the preschool program,” said Gloria Estrada of CCOE Children’s Services. “The Senator even took us into his office where he took time out of his day to answer questions our members had.”

Estrada added that Senator Nielsen shared his ideas with the CalWorks program.

“It is a great program and we serve a lot of CalWorks applicants,” she said.

Following their meeting with Senator Nielsen, the group was invited to sit in on a Budget Committee Hearing.

“We learned more about the legislative process and how a bill becomes law along with learning some new legislative terms,” said Estrada. “Overall it was great, everyone was very receptive.”

Estrada added that she would like to thank the Senator for his continued support.

“It was a positive experience for the group. Most of the parents haven’t been apart of any type of council or group that makes these types of decisions. It was a great learning opportunity.”

The Children’s Services Policy Council is a group of parents and community representatives that discuss different topics and make decisions about program changes, policies, and staffing for Children’s Services Early Head Start/Head Start programs.
