Douglas Delmar Mathews passed away March 10, 2017, at the age of 90 at Woodland Healthcare with his loving family at his side. He was born October 10, 1926, in Arbuckle, CA, to Delmar and Vera Mathews.
After graduating from Pierce High School in Arbuckle, Doug enlisted in the Army Air Force. While waiting to be called up, he went to college at UC Berkley. When called to serve, he went to Amarillo, Texas, for training before being sent to Japan.
After being honorably discharged, Doug returned to Arbuckle, married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor Cain, and started farming. He was the owner and operator of Douglas D. Mathews Ranch in Arbuckle. Doug spent 71 years growing almonds, continuing to do the books when his son, Robert, took over the ranch.
As an almond grower, he became involved with the County Land Bank Association and was director of the Blue Diamond Almond Exchange for 24 years. He was a top athlete in high school and, later, supported sports in the community by umpiring Little League games and Pierce High School baseball games. He was a supportive presence at his children’s sporting events. Besides playing on the town basketball team, he and his wife joined the Arbuckle Golf Club. He was inducted into the Colusa County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
Doug’s community involvement included being a Boy Scouts of America committee member, volunteering for the Arbuckle Fire Department for 21 years, and serving as a trustee on the Pierce Joint Unified School Board for 19 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Eleanor Mathews of Arbuckle; son Robert Mathews (Penny) of Arbuckle; daughters Linda Drawbert of Carmichael and Cynthia Lowery (Wayne) of El Dorado Hills; 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; and his sister Lois Ramont (Dick) of Atascadero. He was preceded in death by his son David Mathews.
Graveside Services will take place at 11:00 am, Friday, March 24, 2017, at College City Cemetery, 689 College City Road, College City, CA. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Arbuckle Golf Club, 5918 Hillgate Road, Arbuckle, CA.
