Colusa police officer interrupts robbery

An Arkansas man was arrested on charges of robbery and exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a peace officer last week after a Colusa Police officer came upon an armed robbery in progress, the department said on Thursday.

“It’s one of those things where officers were out driving around and patrolling at night, and just came upon it while they were on patrol,” said Colusa Police Sgt. Eldon Tamez.

According to Tamez, officer Luis Ruiz was on patrol in the area of Main Street and Eighth Street in Colusa, at about 11:20 PM last Wednesday when he saw a man standing in the middle of the street, pointing a revolver at another man, who was on his knees on the sidewalk.

“Officer Ruiz stopped his car and drew his weapon, and asked the subject to drop his weapon, which the subject did. He cooperated,” Tamez said.

Tamez added that Ruiz waited for more officers to arrive on scene, and the two subjects were detained for questioning.

“Through his investigation, Ruiz learned that these two were transients who were hanging around down by the levee. At some point, Miller decided to pull out a revolver and pointed it at the other subject, and asked him to give him his wallet,” Tamez said. “By the time that Ruiz arrived, the robbery was complete – (Miller) had already gotten (the wallet).”

Tamez added that Ruiz determined that the gun used in the alleged robbery – a revolver – was loaded and that there was no indication that the gun was stolen.

Miller was ultimately arrested for robbery and for exhibiting a firearm in front of a peace officer, and his bail was set at $100,000. He was arraigned in the Colusa County Superior Court on Friday, on charges of second-degree robbery with a special allegation for using a firearm.
