Donald David “Coach” Dana was born May 7, 1929, in Olympia, WA and passed away July 26, 2017, in Yuba City, CA. He was the son of Alex Dana and Velva Blankenship Dana. He went to grade schools in Washington and Oregon and graduated from University High School in Eugene, OR in 1947.
Dave received a Bachelor and a Masters degree from Humbolt State College where he lettered in baseball, football, basketball, and golf. After college and a year of professional baseball, he entered the U.S. Navy where he also played baseball and football on a navy team.
After the Navy, he taught and coached at Torrance, Laytonville, Esparto and Westwood High Schools. He also coached two years at Gavilan College in Gilroy, CA.
In 1967 he joined the faculty at Colusa High School where he taught History and P.E. Dave coached a number of sports, including football, basketball, and golf. He had a very successful career at Colusa for 19 years, winning five league championships in football and 13 league championships in golf. his football team was ranked the No. 1 small school in California in 1972. After retiring from teaching, he coached the Pierce High School Football and golf teams where he won two more league titles.
Dave received the first Colusa High School ‘You Inspired Me’ award in 2010 and in 2013 he received the Colusa County Hall of Fame Coach’s Award.
He is survived by his good friends, David and Connie Driffill and Barbara Bailey, his stepchildren Joy, Susan, and Michael; a sister Mary Jane; and nephews Stephen and Andrew Grediagin. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Mark Grediagin.
