Colusa Redhawks (1-0) opened their volleyball season with a 3-0 match win against the Williams Yellowjackets (1-2) last Tuesday night.
“We should see some pretty intense volleys tonight,” said Coach Hill for the Yellowjackets before Tuesday nights match.
Hill’s team lived up to her pre-match billing; Williams wasted no time in the first match taking a 15-9 lead over the Redhawks during a stretch that saw Laura Davalos and Liz Hernandez block three consecutive kill attempts by Colusa’s Gillian Ayala. A short time-out by RedHawks head coach Tina Lyons helped Colusa to compose themselves, and Colusa clawed their way back within three points, 19-22. A side-out for the Yellowjackets brought them within a point of a set victory, but Colusa’s two-ace run by Jessica Hickel secured a first set victory 26-24.
“It was definitely a tough first set. Hopefully all it was, was first game jitters,” said Lyons.
All jitters aside, Colusa came out strong in the second match. Assisted by Annie Lay, outside hitters Sophia Stocks and Gillian Ayala aided to the Redhawks lead with precise net coverage. Colusa led the entire match and closed out a second win 25-13 and a third match score 25-16 to give the Redhawks their first season win.
“I feel that our team struggled a bit in the beginning. We needed to communicate more with one another on the court, but we bounced back and came out with a win,” said Redhawk Junior Gillian Ayala.
Colusa travels to Oroville (0-2) tomorrow with a 6 PM game time. ■
