Scott Arens for the Pioneer Review
The time is now. If you will be taking college classes anytime between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019 you will need to go online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and Start a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form or Login to your existing account to receive financial aid. A FAFSA can be filed for the 2018-2019 academic year any time between October 1, 2017 and June 30, 2019. I do not recommend viewing this timeframe with any sort of comfort; I would go online and file and not procrastinate.
The FAFSA is not an easy task. It is taxing and laborious. You will be answering a large sum of questions, somewhere around 100. Answer to the best of your ability; now I sound like instructors I’ve had. Your income will most likely be an estimate as of October 1st. If you need to change the amount, you will be able to login and make the correction. You will be able to correct all information online except for an incorrect Social Security identification. Be very careful to be accurate. Correcting this mistake will be extremely time consuming and steal time away from other admission’s tasks. Also, avoid correcting your info more than one or two times.
Don’t falsify information. Your answers need to be honest and accurate. Penalties will be assessed for fraud. The Higher Education Act of 1965 sets fines of up to $20,000 and/or prison terms up to 5 years. The form will be compared with your filed Tax Forms. A common, “costly” misconception for not filing is that parents have too much income. If you apply, you will receive some form of aid. The Institutions award aid in addition to that what the Federal Government may or may not award. This is my 100% guarantee; get $0 aid by not applying.
Have your 2018-19 FAFSA completed as close to October 1st as possible. Save yourself a bigger headache and check it off your admissions “to do” list. You will have more time to focus elsewhere and you will be guaranteed some form of aid. If you have comments, suggestions, and/or questions please email me at Scott@ArensCP.com ■
