Mary Bernelle “Bernie” Kalfsbeek died on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017 in Woodland at the age of 91.
Bernie was born in Springdale, Ark., on Oct. 11, 1926 to Oscar and Lola Spyres. She moved to Arbuckle with her family when she was a senior and graduated from Pierce High School in 1944. After graduation Bernie worked at Bank of America in Arbuckle during which time she met her husband, Hiram Kalfsbeek. The two married after Hiram returned from WWII as a decorated war veteran in 1946. They had six children.
Bernie loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed vacationing at her cabin near Mt. Lassen, cooking and playing bridge. She was an exceptional gardener and was particularly proud of her roses and other flowers.
Bernie is survived by sons Joe (Mary K) Kalfsbeek, Knute (Jeannie) Kalfsbeek, Todd (Debbie) Kalfsbeek, daughter Addie (Willie) Maupin, daughter-in-law Laurie Kalfsbeek, 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Hiram Kalfsbeek, sons Oscar and Guy Kalfsbeek, granddaughter Holly Kalfsbeek, great-grandson Oliver Peterson and brothers Gene, Max and Dale Spyres.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 13, from 6-8 PM, with rosary at 7 PM, at McNary-Moore Funeral Home. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 AM, Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Arbuckle Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Bernie’s name to the Arbuckle Fire Department, 506 Lucas St., Arbuckle, CA 95912.
