More than 400 Colusa County residents are guaranteed to have a hearty holiday meal this Christmas.
On Friday morning, volunteers with the Colusa County Food Basket Association’s Christmas Food Drive put together and distributed 440 Christmas meals to Colusa County families at the Colusa County Fairgrounds. Of those meals, 33 were delivered to senior residents at the Eskaton Frank Jaconetti Manor, and 24 were home deliveries. The rest were picked up at the fairgrounds.
According to organizer Patti Hickel, the Colusa County Food Basket Association, with the help of community volunteers, collected, boxed, and distributed the food baskets — which were filled with donations made at every school in Colusa County, in addition to various other locations.
“I had a great group of volunteers helping throughout the whole week,” said Hickel.
Some of those volunteers helped the Colusa County Food Basket Association distribute on Friday, and others helped put the boxes together in the days leading up to the event.
In addition to food donations made at county schools, the Food Basket Association received financial donations from local businesses and individuals, which allowed the group to round out the baskets to put together complete meals with items such as milk, eggs, butter, canned ham, oil, flour, sugar, and peanut butter.
The last of those donations came on Thursday when Connie Cornelius, of the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way, presented the Food Basket Association with a $645 check. ■
