East Park reservoir hosts Westside Anglers Bass Tournament

The Westside Anglers’ 34th annual bass fishing tournament fundraiser was held at East Park Reservoir this weekend, and this year’s tournament winners are hoping the fishing club decides to come back to the Colusa County location again next year.

“With the way things went and the big bags that came in today, they may want to have it here again next year,” said Yuba City resident Joe Stout, who fished the tournament with his father Ron Stout, a Meridian resident.

Westside Anglers is a fishing club based out of Maxwell, but the club also has members from nearby communities. The club hosts fishing tournaments once a month throughout the year, but Saturday’s event was Westside Anglers’ annual fundraiser. The proceeds from the tournament primarily go to scholarships for students in Colusa, Glenn, and Sutter counties, as well as a number of other charitable causes.

While anglers had to battle with some chilly early morning temperatures, the bite was hot – particularly for the Stouts, who blew away the competition on Saturday with a bag weight of 19.83 pounds – good enough for a first-place trophy and a $700-plus cash prize. Joe Stout said that he and his father primarily fished with homemade, black and clear tube lures.

“It was a good tournament,” Joe Stout said. “We actually caught more fish than I thought we were going to.”■
