Pierce and Maxwell were among twelve varsity softball teams at the Biggs Wolverine Classic, and each squad won three games and lost two over the course of the tournament, which was abridged to two days due to rainy weather on Thursday.
Maxwell opened the tournament with a game with a close, 3-2 loss to Hamilton. Pierce’s first action came against the Panthers – the second time the two teams had faced off in the four days. Maxwell was up 2-1 after the first inning, but the Bears scored six runs in the top of the second to go up 7-2. Down 10-3 in the bottom of the third, the Panthers managed to make things interesting, scoring five runs to get themselves within striking distance. After Pierce added an insurance run in the top of the fourth, Maxwell rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but ultimately fell short, and the Bears came away with an 11-10 win.
Freshman Betsey Myers and Sophomore Grace Alonso led the way for Pierce at the plate, with each going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and three RBIs. For Maxwell, Brenda Cano, Wep Fred, and Morgan Dennis each had two hits. Tiffy Jenkins led the Panthers with two RBIs, and was 1-for-3 with a triple.
Maxwell finished the two-day tournament with wins against Chester (11-1), Trinity (8-6), and Mercy (9-3), and the two losses to Pierce and Hamilton, bringing them to a 6-10 on the season. Maxwell’s Hannah Azevedo, Tiffany Jenkins and Morgan Dennis led the Panthers in hits and runs batted in.
The Bears were victorious over Portola (10-0), Trinity (9-2) and Maxwell (11-10) and fell to Quincy (8-10) and Etna (4-12). After they return from spring break, Pierce hosts Live Oak Tuesday, April 10 at 4 PM.■
