Sesquicentennial celebration planned in Colusa

Colusa is gearing up for a full day of activities on June 16 that will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the city’s incorporation.

The daylong celebration will honor the 1868 establishment of Colusa as the first city in Colusa County, said Sesquicentennial Committee member Cynthia White.

The incorporation day activities will begin at 8 AM with a pancake breakfast at the Colusa Fire Department, followed by a historic skit and a walking tour of historic homes and business near the downtown. The committee also plans to have activities at the river during the day, and then host an evening picnic in Veterans Memorial Park.

“We would like to have something on the water – maybe kayak or canoe races, or paddle boats,” White said.

The Sacramento River has played an important part in Colusa’s economy the past 150 years, but it was the historic Water Carnival and boat races held in 1909 (see Colusa 150, PG 12), which put Colusa on the map for recreational boating, committee members said.

Short of formal events, the group will call for all river enthusiasts to just be on the Sacramento River in Colusa on June 16 for a decorated boat parade.

“Just a bunch of Colusans taking pride in and reveling in the Sacramento River, Colusa’s greatest asset,” said Allison Yerxa. “They can decorate their floating vessels if they want…or not.  Whatever it takes to make it look festive out there.”

Evening events will include a picnic of pulled pork or hot dog, cooked by Colusa Rural Firefighters (Sac River) at Veterans Memorial Park. The evening event will also include presentations by Colusa officials, past and present.

The committee has already launched the festivities early with the sale of historic photos, an 18-month calendar that commences in June, and notecards, all of which are now available for purchase from committee members, and the group will have them available for purchase at their booth in Festival Hall during the Colusa County Fair, June 7-10.

Historic photographs of Colusa start at $15. The calendar is also $15. Note cards with historic photographs are $3 each.

Breakfast and dinner tickets are also available now. Breakfast tickets are $5 (Kids under 10 free); dinner tickets are $10 for pulled pork or $5 for hot dog.■
