The S. William Abel Community School last week added nine high school students and two eighth grade students to its roster of successful graduates.

The June 13 ceremony began with a welcome by Principal Lorilee Niesen and Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Maria Arvizu-Espinoza.

The Colusa County Office of Education oversees the program, which allows primarily court-supervised students from Colusa County school districts an alternative path to achieving a high school diploma. Maria Elena Belmontes (Colusa), Jacobe Buenvenida Flannery (Maxwell), Christian Clark (Pierce), Nicholas Garibay (Maxwell), Jasmine Marie Hansen (Maxwell), Michael Peck (Pierce), Cody Polit (Maxwell), Lupita Valdez Cruz (Williams), and Jose Zuniga (Williams) received their high school diplomas although not all attended the ceremony. Abigail Amador Enriquez (Colusa) also participated in the ceremony. Graduates promoted to high school from the eighth grade included Philip Ron Dewayne Flannery (Maxwell) and Bryan Pimentel (Colusa).

Highlights of the evening included comments from Colusa County Superintendent Mike West and special remarks from the school’s namesake, retired Colusa County Superior Court Judge S. William Abel.

Colusa County Board of Education President Barry Morrell, along with West and school staff, awarded the diplomas.

Family and friends gathered to support and cheer for the students who chose to participate in commencement exercises, which were held at the Education Village in Williams.
A reception was held following the ceremony.

The S. William Abel Community School salutes the Class of 2018 and wishes them well in all their future endeavors.
