Bernard (Barney) Martin Gonzales Jr. of Colusa passed away June 16, 2018. Barney was 95 ½ years young. Born November 6, 1922 in Vacaville, California. His parents traveled by boat (Bernard Sr. and Rose) around Cape Horn as children. The families originating in Spain first worked in Hawaii, and then California.
Barney grew up in Vacaville, Penryn, and Colusa. He graduated from Colusa High School in 1941 with a basketball scholarship. But fate would find him serving his country. Barney was inducted into the Army- Air Force on November 19, 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He worked as an airplane mechanic on our “war birds.” He loved flying the planes when they took them up to be checked out. Barney remembers cruising into San Francisco Bay after his service time.
Barney married the love of his life. Ferne Meek shortly after his induction into the military. They enjoyed nearly 60 years of married life.
After a few years of work in Sacramento, the young couple returned to Colusa where Barney owned and operated Barney’s Shell Service. Retiring 43 years later.
He was the ultimate outdoorsman. Weekends and holidays were often filled with hunting or fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, abalone diving, jeep trips, bicycling, and riding his Harley.
Barney was always positive. He found great enjoyment in every day and had a kind word for everyone he knew.
He is survived by his brother Raymond “Jiggs” Gonzales; sister, now deceased, Barbara Vann; daughter Kathie Johnson (Mike) of Reno, Nevada; son Terry Gonzales (Laurie) of Stockton, California; son Larry Gonzales of Colusa, California; and four granddaughters.
Thanks for the best of adventures Dad! Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 10:30a.m. at Colusa Cemetery. A gathering will follow at Rocco’s Banquet Hall.
