“Everything must go,” says a liquidation banner in front of Impact Thrift Store in Colusa.
“It’s sad; there are a lot of people this is going affect,” said store manager, Amy Gerrard.
After months of decreasing sales and bills to pay, the non-profit’s board of directors has decided to close its doors.
“Our last day will be July 27,” said Gerrard. “Until then, we are liquidating everything we have in store, starting with 25 percent off. The discounts will get bigger as we get closer to our closing date.”
While the thrift store aims to empty its shelves and racks before they close, many community services will disappear as well.
“With the closure of the thrift store, our food bank will close too,” said Gerrard.
Gerrard said in the past few weeks, the food bank has relied on generous donations to stay open, due to a delay in federal grant funding.
“We’ve received donations from N&R Trailers Leasing of Live Oak, Norma and Ronald Giovannetti of Yuba City, The McCarty Family, and Edward Jones of Colusa,” said Gerrard.
“Thanks to them we can provide necessary food items to those in need through the end of July.”
What’s the fate of the food bank? According to Gerrard, the food bank will close unless another organization comes forward to take it over.
“We provide meals to an average of 35 families a week,” said Gerrard.
In addition to the food bank, the thrift store provided clothing to those in need, affordable/no-cost dresses for proms and dances, and emergency clothing for children in protective services. Several work experience opportunities will disappear, including the Welfare-to-Work program (a comprehensive employment and training program designed to promote self-sufficiency), community service opportunities for probationary teenagers, and work experience and workplace development programs for the developmentally disabled.
“A lot of people are going to be impacted,” said Gerrard. “I don’t know what else to say, it really sucks.”
During its liquidation sale, Impact Thrift Store will be open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Tuesday – Thursday, 10 AM to 4:30 PM.
Impact Thrift Store is located at 541 Fremont Street, in Colusa.
