Harvey Named Patient’s Rights Advocate

Submitted to the WPR

When Ginger Harvey of Colusa was appointed as the new Colusa County Behavioral Health Patient’s Rights Advocate (PRA) she saw it as a great opportunity to help and to give back to her community. Now three months into her appointment, she said she is finding it to be very rewarding.

Harvey has been involved with Behavioral Health and a number of its programs for about four years.

As the PRA she said she hopes to provide a voice for consumers who seek her assistance. “With position I want to assist in making sure the voices are heard, and that consumers’ needs are met,” she said.

She said she likes working with the consumers, and that she has found interim director William Cornelius has an open door policy which benefits her efforts as well.

Harvey, previously of Chico came to Colusa about 10 years ago. Her career path has been in the medical field as a ward clerk, staffing coordinator at the Chico Community Hospital and as a medical assistant.

Once in Colusa, she became aware of the services at Behavioral Health, and has assisted with a number of things through the Workforce Education and Training Action Volunteer group and Safe Haven Drop-In Center.

She is interested in crafts and quilting, and she has also shared those skills with the Safe Haven participants.

She is also a member of the Quilt Guild and the Colusa County Arts Council. She has a love of animals. “I’d say I have a sense of humor, and sometimes that helps us meet our challenges,” she said.

As the PRA, Harvey hopes to reach out to the Behavioral Health community and to provide the assistance in meeting the needs and making sure the concerns are heard.

Harvey said she is very excited to have been given this opportunity. “I really want to help. This is what I love to do,” she said. ■
