Colusa church reaches out to single mothers

It’s not always easy being a single mom of school-aged children, but the Colusa Assembly of God Church is helping to make the start of a new school year special.

The church will host a “Portrait Night” this coming Saturday so that single moms and their kids will have something memorable from the 2018-2019 school year, at no cost to them.
The event will include free hairstyling, a photo shoot with a professional photographer, and a giveaway of free school supplies to single mothers who attend.

“This church is always looking out to the community to find needs,” said Pastor Ken Edwards. “We realize that sometimes single moms don’t always have the income to do school pictures, or even purchase school supplies here in Colusa.”

The Back to School Portrait Night will start at 3 PM, at the Assembly of God Church, located at 1747 Highway 20, in Colusa, and is limited to first come, first served.
The event will include refreshments and games for kids.

Edwards said the church congregation funded the event, and church or family members have donated their professional photography and hairstyling services.

“We wanted to do something to reach out to single moms,” Edwards said. “We will have food there. We will also have a game room for the kids and prizes. We want our single moms to have something that is important to them.”

The Colusa Assembly of God Church has about 80 members in its congregation, and, along with the community, they support the church’s “Love Colusa” program.

This is not the first time the Colusa Assembly of God Church has reached out to meet the needs of the community. Last year, the church donated a new pair of shoes to every student at Burchfield Elementary School.

Edwards said the “Love Colusa” programs also help with public outreach.

“We want to let people know the church is here, and that we are here to help,” he said.
