A Fresno man was arrested last week after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase on Interstate 5.
David Daniel Escobar, 42, was arrested at 3:30 AM on Sept. 4 by an officer from the Woodland Area Office of the California Highway Patrol after he led officers on a chase that began in Colusa County and reached speeds in excess of 140 mph before a spike strip ended the chase in Yolo County.
According to California Highway Patrol officer Justin Sherwood, an officer on patrol observed Escobar’s 2016 black and gray Ford Mustang driving at 96 mph in a 70 mph zone on northbound I-5, north of County Line Road south of Arbuckle. When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Escobar pulled his vehicle to the right shoulder. When the officer approached his vehicle, however, Escobar made a immediate u-turn across the center median of I-5, and began traveling south on southbound I-5, Sherwood said. The officer initiated a pursuit at about 2:45 AM. At one point, Escobar exited the freeway at Yolo County Road 6, but reentered the freeway and continued to travel south. The officer ended the pursuit 17 minutes later, at about 3:02 AM, after he lost sight of the Mustang.
“The CHP unit was traveling 130 mph, and was unable to keep up with the (suspect) vehicle,” Sherwood said.
Near Woodland, another CHP officer clocked Escobar traveling 140 mph. Officers set up and deploy a spike strip on the freeway north of West St., and did so successfully, Sherwood said. Escobar exited the freeway with no further incident, and pulled into the AM/PM Store on West St., where he was arrested by Woodland-area CHP officers at around 3:30 AM.
Escobar was booked into the Colusa County jail on suspicion of evading an officer with willful disregard for public safety; driving on a license suspended or revoked for a prior DUI; and resisting, obstructing or delaying a police officer.
He is also being charged with possession of a controlled substance. Sherwood said officers located a small amount of methamphetamine and some counterfeit $20 bills during an inventory search of the vehicle.
Escobar is being held on $50,000 bail.
