Maxwell Unified reorganizes school board

Members of the Maxwell Unified School District Board of Trustees played their own version of musical chairs at their annual reorganization meeting on Dec. 11.

Superintendent Zach Thurman administered the oath of office to returning school board members Cristy Edwards and Tom Charter, who were re-elected in the 2018 general election, to another four-year term.

Thurman also swore in Maxwell farmer Robert Shadley III, who beat out two other office seekers in the election.

Shadley, graduated from Willows High School and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He also serves on the Maxwell Little League Board of Directors, and coaches baseball and basketball.

He and his wife, Summer, an elementary school principal, have two children attending school in the Maxwell district.

Shadley’s father, Robert Shadley, Jr., a retired Glenn County sheriff, attended his son’s swearing in ceremony.

Shadley III replaces Kim Giffin, who did not seek another term.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better person to step up and fill my position, and I’m very happy that Rob is sitting in that seat,” Giffin said. “He’s a gentleman and a good man.”

Maxwell Superintendent of Schools, Zach Thurman, presented Giffin with a plaque recognizing her term as a school board member, and her effort to strengthen the bond between the community and the school.

Giffin was slightly tearful as she said her good-bye.

“These last four years – I won’t say they’ve flown by; sometimes they crawled by – but I couldn’t have asked for more wonderful people to sit next to at that table,” she told the school board. “I really come to value and appreciate the different way you’ve managed things, and you are wonderful community members. Everybody up there does it for the right reasons, and I feel that we accomplished a lot together. We set out to do some things and we did them, and I feel that for the first time in four years we are at a spot in our district that they are really beginning to bear fruit. We’ve supported the right people and brought in the right people.”

During their annual reorganization, Trustee Kelly Haywood was selected to serve as school board president until December 2019. Trustee Diana Kemp Azevedo will serve as vice-president, and Edwards will serve as board clerk.

The Maxwell Unified School District Board of Trustees regularly meets at 5 PM on the second Wednesday of each month, with some exceptions during the school year and summer, due to holidays. ■
