Colusa County pet owners who have recently spayed or neutered their dogs or cats may be reimbursed for all or a portion of that fee starting January 2019.
“Spaying and neutering your pet is recommended for all non-breeding dogs and cats for their health, as well as the public’s well-being,” said Chief Animal Control Officer Courtney Elliott.
Owners can also benefit with reduced license fees and lower fees if the Animal Control impounds their animal, Elliott added.
Following California Law F&A #30523 & #31751.7, the Colusa County Animal Control collects fines on dogs and cats that are impounded and are not spayed or neutered.
“Each time the animal is picked up, the owner is fined an escalating fee,” said Elliott.
The first impound is $35, second impound $50, third and subsequent impounds $100.
“These monies are placed in a designated account,” said Elliott. “And per the law, the money must be used for humane education or a spay/neuter program for Colusa County residents.”
In January, pet owners may be reimbursed for up to two pets per household. Owners must submit an invoice from a California licensed veterinarian to the Animal Control Office where a form will be completed authorizing Colusa County to reimburse the owner up to $100 of the actual cost of the spay/neuter surgery. Receipts must be dated within the last 90 days. Reimbursement does not cover any additional procedures. All dogs must be licensed before reimbursement is issued.
The reimbursement program will be available as long as funds remain.
“Spaying and neutering reduces the number of unplanned and unwanted animals,” Elliot said. “This program rewards responsible pet owners who care for the health of their pets, as well as the health of the community.” ■
