County Library offers literacy programs for babies and tots

Language and literacy skills start early – from birth.

That is why Monday mornings at the Colusa County Free Library’s main branch are filled with songs, stories, and play with the early literacy program Nursery App Time.

The Colusa County Free Library’s Literacy Program, in partnership with the Colusa County Office of Education, puts on this program for infants and children, age 5 and under, and their caregivers.

Here, participants listen to nursery rhymes told in their traditional printed form, along with the electronic versions found on the Footsteps2Brilliance app, funded by CCOE,” Library officials said.

“Studies have shown that nursery rhymes aid children in the development of their language and communication skills, and introducing children to a variety of nursery rhymes can help them to better understand and learn about different sounds,” said Colusa County Literacy Coordinator Alissa Morrow.

The NAPP program occurs year-round from 10-10:45 AM each Monday at the Colusa Library, 738 Market St. No registration is necessary.

Another popular literacy program for babies and tots is coming back to all branches of the Colusa County Free Library systems.

Raising A Reader at the Colusa, Arbuckle, Grimes, Maxwell, Princeton, and Williams branches will return Jan. 29.

This 10-week program geared towards babies and children age 5 and under, and their caregivers, is implemented by the Colusa County Free Library’s Literacy Program, in partnership with First 5 Colusa.

RAR is a nationally recognized program that features weekly story times, book bag rotations, and emphasizes parent-child bonding and peer socialization, Morrow said. Additionally, weekly activities will focus on the five developmental areas vital to child development: gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, personal-social, and communication.

The program will culminate in a graduation ceremony where participants will get to take home a free bag of books.

Registration for Raising A Reader runs from Jan. 7 through Feb. 15. Each session is capped at 15 participants.

To register, visit your local branch library. For information about both Raising A Reader and Nursery App Time, contact the Literacy Coordinator at 458-0373. ■
