Saturday the Williams Yellowjackets descended to Winters for the 2019 Division 3 Boys Soccer championship game. Despite valiant efforts from the Yellowjackets, a final score of 2-4, in overtime, closed out the season for Williams.
With a 17-6 record, the Yellowjackets faired an even match-up against the Winters Warriors. Williams worked quick on offense, as Mauricio Moralez with a cross to Gerry Gomez headed the ball to the back of Winters net at the five-minute mark. Williams defended the Warriors scoreless in the first quarter for a Yellowjacket lead 0-1.
The second quarter play brought several saves at the Williams goal line by Diego Jauregui but at the three-minute mark, Winters would push through tying the game 1-1. With no other goals in regulation time, two 10 minute overtime halves began, followed by a second overtime with two, five-minute halves of which neither offenses could find the net.
Penalty kicks were assessed to determine a winner, Williams took the first shot at the net and found success from Jauregui but couldn’t execute with enough blocks from Winter’s chosen kickers and found themselves out of opportunities with a 2-4 loss. ■
