Colusa’s top students honored

The annual Super Seven Dinner for Colusa High School’s most academically accomplished upperclassmen was held Monday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, in Colusa.

Torchbearer Gamma Alpha Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and the Colusa Lions Club recognized seven seniors and seven juniors with the highest academic records at Colusa High School. 

The Super Seven Dinner originated in 1975, based on a proposal by Florence Stevens, president of the Colusa Women’s Club. The Club continued the tradition for 22 years until it disbanded. Beta Sigma Phi has managed the program since 1998. 

The Colusa County Office of Education and several local businesses helped to sponsor the event with donations and support. 

During the dinner, the Super Seven seniors honored the teacher who they felt had influenced them the most.

SENIORS 

Colusa High School’s top seniors John Boeger, left, Chloe Ferraiuolo, Emily Reyes, Nayeli Perez, Rosa Montez, Helena Harris, and Erik Wrysinski were recognized April 1, 2019 for their outstanding academic achievements at the annual Super Seven Dinner, hosted Torchbearer Gamma Chapter Beta Sigma Phi and Colusa Lions Club.

John Boeger 

John Boeger is the son of Matt and Jill Boeger. His main interests in school are math and science. His extra-curricular activities are Future Business Leaders of America and golf. He works at Orv’s 76 gas station, in Williams. His hobbies include wakeboarding during the summer months, snowboarding during the winter months, and watching movies. Boeger plans to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he will pursue an advanced degree in engineering. Boeger named Dak Kalisuch as his teacher of influence. 

Chloe Ferraiuolo 

Chloe Ferraiuolo is the daughter of Julius and Paula Ferraiuolo. Her main interests in school are biological sciences and advanced business management.  She is involved in Future Business Leaders of America, where she has held positions of Chapter treasurer, Northern Section president, and State vice president. In addition to all this, Ferraiuolo is Colusa High School’s Associated Student Body president. She enjoys playing tennis, painting, and exploring new places, and is employed by Cameron C. Kaelin Farming. Ferraiuolo plans to attend a four-year university where she will double major in general education and marine biology.  She plans to become a college professor. She named Nikole Burg as her teacher of influence. 

Rosa Garibay montez

Rosa Garibay is the daughter of Joaquin and Ortencia Garibay. Math and biology are Garibay’s main interests in school.  She is a member of the Environmental Sciences Academy and is treasurer of the Spanish Club. Her hobbies are reading, taking pictures, and walking around town with her mom and sister. Garibay plans to attend a four-year university to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology. She named John Wirt as her teacher of influence. 

Helena Mayella Harris 

Helena Mayella Harris is the daughter of Montserrat Arias and Chad Woodring.  Her main interests in school are the sciences and advanced business management. She is the Associated Student Body vice president, director of projects for Future Business Leaders of America, an officer in the Spanish Club, and is a member of 4-H.

Harris’ hobbies include playing competitive and high school softball, as well as raising a market hog for 4-H.  She also has a job with Cross Electric. Harris will be attending Dominican University of California, in San Rafael, to pursue her softball and educational career.  She plans to graduate from college with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and to specialize in trauma. She named Sonny Badaluco as her teacher of influence. 

Emily Pantoja Reyes

Emily Pantoja Reyes is the daughter Everardo a Juana Pantoja. She is interested in Spanish and shop. She is a member the cheerleading squad, the soccer team, and Spanish Club. Her hobbies include drawing and painting, and doing her make-up. She plans to attend California State University at Sacramento to study nursing. She named Melissa Michalk as her teacher of influence. 

Nayeli Juarez Perez 

Nayeli Juarez Perez is the daughter Baltazar and Gloria Juarez. Her main interests in school are math and Ag mechanics. She is a member of the cheerleading squad, and enjoys running, listening to music, and riding ATVs with her dad. After attending California State University at Sacramento to earn a degree in radiology and sonography, Perez plans to work in a hospital. She named Kimberly Olson as her teacher of influence. 

Erik Wrysinski 

Erik Wrysinski is the son of Jon and Colleen Wrysinski. His main school interests are physics, biology, and technology. He is a member of Future Business Leaders of America, Associated Student Body, Environmental Science Academy, and Redhawk Broadcast. His hobbies are driving, watching movies with friends, video games, learning about the newest technology, and helping others to learn about technology. He has a job doing EBay contract work and freelance tech support. Wrysinski plans to get a bachelor’s degree in computer science. He would like to become a systems analyst and pursue a job in information technology with a large company in the Bay Area. He named John Wirt as his teacher of influence.

Pablo Barrera Munoz 

Pablo Barrera Munoz is the son of Joaquin and Elizabeth Barrera. His main interests in school are biology, English, history, and leadership. He is a member of the Environmental Sciences Academy, Future Business Leaders of America, California Scholarship Federation, Associated Student Body, and member of the basketball squad. He likes to listen to music, watch major league baseball games, and to sleep. He also enjoys learning new things, playing sports, and he is a podcast enthusiast. Munoz plans to attend a four-year university after high school.

Edgar Cruz Vasquez

Edgar Cruz Vasquez is the son of Timoteo Cruz and Florencia Vasquez. Art and math are his main interests in school. However, he is generally just interested in helping others. He belongs to Future Business Leaders of America, Environmental Sciences Academy, Colusa’s Youth Advocates for Change, and Upward Bound. He is a member of the track team, the Spanish Club, the Art Club, and Independent Living Program. He loves art, and whenever there is an opportunity to volunteer, he is there. Vasquez plans to attend a four-year college where he will major in science, technology, engineering or math, most likely computer science.

Chaena Laux

Chaena Laux is the daughter of Jacob and Shannon Laux. She is mainly interested in Environmental Sciences Academy, science, and art. She is on the basketball and tennis teams and is a member of Environmental Sciences Academy, the Art Club, and the Spanish Club. She is also a tutor. Laux likes to draw, paint, do photography, and read. In addition to all this, she likes to ride her motorcycle. In the mornings, she works in the Colusa High School cafeteria. In the future, she would like to find work within the field of science, most likely marine biology.

Bailey McCarty

Bailey McCarty is the daughter of Dino and Kimberly McCarty. Since she likes to be involved with her peers, and the Associated Student Body is her main interest in school. She also likes the science program. She plays tennis and is involved in Future Business Leaders of America and Environmental Sciences Academy. Her hobbies include playing sports, going to the gym, and spending time with family and friends. She also has a job with Granzella’s, in Williams. After graduating from high school, McCarty plans to attend a four-year college to major in nursing.

Alejandra Melchor Barragan 

Alejandra Melchor Barragan is the daughter of Andres Melchor and Mirna Barragan. Her main interests in school are math and art. While in school, she enjoys the opportunity to see friends and to progress through her academic career. Barragan is a member of Colusa’s Youth Advocates for Change, Environmental Sciences Academy, Art Club, and the Spanish Club. She likes listening to music, drawing, and painting, sometimes. She plans to do her best in school so that she can attend a good college and prepare for a career, although she hasn’t decided on her career choice.

Christian Reyna

Christian Reyna is the son of Jose and Savina Reyna. His main academic interests are science, medicine, and space. He tries to maintain a 4.0 grade point average. He is extremely involved in Associated Student Body, Environmental Sciences Academy, California Scholarship Federation, and is a Future Business Leaders of America officer. He plays football and track, and he is a volunteer tutor once a week. His hobbies include making videos for the RedHawk broadcast, playing video games, and hanging out with friends whenever he gets the chance. Outside of school, Reyna has a job mowing lawns by appointment. His future plans for high school is to become president for the Future Business Leaders of America, Associated Student Body vice president, and to graduate as a Super Seven senior scholar. After high school, Reyna wants to graduate from either the University of California at Los Angeles or Davis with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Eventually he would like to become a travel nurse. Reyna loves helping others and trying to be the best person he can be. He works hard and he is always willing to learn.

Cole Simmons

Cole Simmons is the son of Matthew and Cynthia Simmons. He is interested in math and sports. He is a member of the baseball and basketball squads, Future Business Leaders of America, and Associated Student Body. Hunting and fishing are his hobbies and he has a job with Matt Simmons Construction. Simmons’ plans for the future are to attend a four-year college, to find a small town with good job opportunities, and to make some good money. ■
