Trial set for convicted sex offender

A man already serving a 24-year prison sentence for sexually abusing a child will stand trial in Colusa County Superior Court for molesting another.

Jerry Alva “J.R.” Gregston, 48, of Williams, pleaded not guilty on March 27 to three felony sexual abuse charges, including performing a lewd act with a child under 10 years old.

His trial has been set for September 25-27.

Gregston was first arrested in 2011 and charged with 14 counts of felony sexual abuse that included sexual intercourse with a child under 10 years old, sodomy, performing lewd acts with a child, and oral copulation, among other offenses.

He pleaded no contest on May 9, 2012 to one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child, for which he was sentenced to 16 years in prison, and one count of oral copulation by force, for which he was sentenced to eight years; both sentences to be served consecutively.

Gregston was seven years into his prison sentence at Mule Creek State Prison, in Ione, when the Colusa County District Attorney’s Office said a second child came forward with allegations of abuse, which allegedly occurred prior to Gregston’s 2011 arrest.

Gregston is in the custody of the Colusa County Jail pending trial. He is represented by Public Defender Albert Smith.

A trial readiness conference has been scheduled for 1 PM on June 26. ■
