The Pierce High School FFA chapter hosted the annual Field Day on February 4th 2012. “Pierce High FFA is the only non-college entity to host such an event in California. Colleges and Junior Colleges are usually the ones hosting field days,” says Alex Marsh, the co-chair of the event. Justin Gwerder was the chair of the event. Running back and forth, making sure everything went swimmingly.

The field day hosted around 850 contestants from 69 schools all over California, starting from Eureka and ending in Arroyo Grande and Santa Monica. Every county participated in the big event. There are sixteen contests for students to compete in, all run by FFA students from Pierce and other chapters. The contests include: Ag Mechanics, Ag Sales, Best Informed Greenhand (BIG), Co-op, Creed, Dairy Products, Farm Power, Farm Records, Floriculture, Forestry, Nursery/Landscape, Job Interview, Light Horse Judging, Small Engines, Specialty Animals, and Vegetable Crops. Every contest requires a different skill set, and a variety of materials that the contestants helped with by paying a small fee. All the Pierce High classrooms were used to host each contest, including the North and South gyms for the welcoming and Awards ceremonies. FFA members did an amazing job of cleaning up the spaces they used; leaving everything cleaner than it was before they used it.

1,250 contestants, advisers, and volunteers were served generous portions of tri-tip, beans, salad, garlic bread and cookies plus a drink for lunch. Lunch was held at the Johnson Junior High School right next door. The meal was cooked and served by volunteers from the community and the school. There was also a snack bar, manned by members of the Arbuckle 4-H club, provided donuts, a variety of juices, hot chocolate, coffee and water.

There were also many volunteers that were allowed to judge the competitions. Pierce High School FBLA members and students from

UC Davis helped tabulate all the scores to determine the winners. The awards ceremony took place at 2:00 pm after all the scores were tallied, ties broken, and winners chosen.

Prizes and Ribbons were awarded to the top ten individuals and teams who did well in each contest. All prizes were donated by local businesses and individual community members.

The field day was a success, bringing schools all over California together for a little friendly competition. It also hit a bit closer to home by bringing some of the schools clubs together to help out. Congratulations to all the participants and winners of the FFA Field Day. And thank you to all the sponsors and volunteers that made this event possible. ■
