John Boeger and Anna Rios, Colusa County’s top elementary school spellers, will represent Colusa County on Saturday, April 21, 2012, in the California State Elementary Spelling Championship.

John, a 5th grade student at Egling Middle School, took top honors and Anna, a 6th grade student at Williams Upper Elementary School, was runner-up in the Colusa County Elementary Spelling Championship. The county competition, which lasted a record-breaking 38 rounds, was over for 26 other competitors by the end of 4th round.

Because of the tenacity and skill of both of the final competitors, the spelling event began to resemble a long-running tennis match, while John and Anna continued to correctly spell words for an additional 34 rounds. Anna carefully and methodically worked out her words, while John quickly and decisively attacked each spelling in front of an audience of 75 people including family, friends, teachers, principals, and school superintendents. After a grueling hour and a half, the winning word for John was “lackadaisical”, while “entrepreneur” finally knocked out Anna.

The event was moderated and judged by Colusa County Superintendent of Schools, Kay Spurgeon, and qualifies the county contestants to participate in the State competition.

After attending the competition, which was held at the Granzella’s Banquet Center in Williams, Dr. Judith Rossi, Superintendent of Williams Unified School District, remarked “I am amazed at the vocabulary of our young students!” Dr. Rossi continued, “They know how to spell a vast array of words and are able to use them in conversation. The challenge of competing in a public forum was exciting for all participants and observers.” Because of the students’ efforts, Dr. Rossi said “I have made a promise to myself to increase my vocabulary as a result of seeing the power of words and spelling,” and she added “I am proud of all of the students, teachers, families and especially Anna Rios.”

As the runner up in 2011, this will be John’s second trip to the annual state contest held in Stockton. All 58 counties in California are eligible to send two spellers to the state competition, hosted by the San Joaquin County Office of Education. The public is invited to attend the state event at the Wentworth Education Center, 2707 Transworld Drive in Stockton.
