The Safe Haven Drop-In Center will host an open house and official Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at 4 pm on April 25.

The event will also include a “Wish List” shower for the new facility.

The Center originated as a one-room and patio site at the Colusa County Behavioral Health Department.  At its new 131 5th Street location  in Colusa. The new building boasts eight rooms, which includes a kitchen where participants prepare and share breakfast and lunches.

According to peer support specialist Valerie Stirling who oversees the day-to-day operation of the center and Dereck Parks, Mental Health Services Act coordinator who also has offices at the center the participation has increased greatly since moving to the new building.

When the center, designed as a non-judgmental and safe place for people to share and learn skills originated four years ago it had an average of five daily attendees. Now there are more than 40 visitors on a regular daily basis.

Behavioral Health interim director William Cornelius commented that the move has been a very positive move. “We are serving more individuals in our community,” he said. “We are meeting a very important need.”
