Public Meeting Planned for Mill Fire @ 7PM – July 10

A public meeting is planned at the Stonyford Grange Hall today, July 10, at 7 p.m.

Members of NorCal Team 2 and the Mendocino National Forest will provide an operational update and smoke information. The fire is currently 13,000 acres and 20 percent contained.

There are currently 917 resources assigned to the fire. Firefighters continue today to build and strengthen containment lines around the fire perimeter. Mop up and “cold-trailing” (physically checking the line for residual heat) is starting on the north end of the fire.

“We are pleased with the progress the team is making, but there is still a lot of active fire in the area. We appreciate your patience and support as we continue our work,” said NorCal Type 2 Incident Commander Joe Molhoek.

A closure order is in effect for the Mendocino National Forest for all roads and trails in the recreation area outside Stonyford on the south central portion of the Grindstone Ranger District. The closure order can be found at www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/mendocino/alerts-notices. This area is very popular with forest visitors, including off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts and those looking forward to the upcoming archery season.

The Mendocino National Forest offers a wealth of natural and cultural resources in addition to its unique recreational opportunities. Firefighters are making efforts to protect these special attributes for residents and visitors by preventing damage to wet meadows, riparian areas, wildlife habitat and cultural and heritage sites.

The Mendocino County Air Quality Management District has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Covelo/Round Valley and the Mendocino County portion of the Mendocino National Forest due to smoke from the various fires in the region.
