Trustee Brent Hastey has been elected the new Chair of the Yuba Community College District (YCCD) Board of Trustees. A unanimous vote at last Wednesday’s Annual Organizational Meeting brought Mr. Hastey to the position held over the past year by Trustee Xavier Tafoya.

Mr. Hastey represents Trustee Area I, which consists of all of Yuba County, a small portion of Butte County in the Marysville Joint Unified School District, and the city of Live Oak in Sutter County. Mr. Hastey was first elected to the YCCD Board of Trustees in 2008. His current term expires in 2012.

“I would like to thank my fellow Trustees for giving me the opportunity to serve as Board Chair for 2012,” Trustee Hastey said. “My goal is to make YCCD a leader within the community college system. To accomplish this, I plan to meet with other Board Chairs throughout the state in order to collaborate and strategically tackle the financial issues facing our system while simultaneously finding innovative ways to ensure student success. My ultimate goal is to be able to formulate a group of small rural colleges to work on these issues at the legislative level,” Trustee Hastey added.

The YCCD Governing Board also elected Trustee Jim Kennedy (Trustee Area I) as Vice-Chair and Trustee David Wheeler as Board Clerk (Trustee Area II, which consists of all of Sutter County except the city of Live Oak, and a small portion of Placer County in the East Nicolaus Joint Union High School District).

As one of his first orders of business, Trustee Hastey made the following appointments to the Board’s standing committees:

  • Audit Committee: Trustees Kennedy, Tafoya and Buchan
  • Finance Committee: Trustees Wheeler, Kennedy and Hastey
  • Policy Committee: Trustees Sandy, Pearson and Wheeler

Additionally, Trustees Allen, Buchan, Hastey and Sandy were appointed to the Board Docs Ad Hoc Committee.

Trustee Hastey also recognized outgoing Board Chair Xavier Tafoya for his service and presented him with a plaque on behalf of the entire Board.

“It was truly an honor to have served as Board Chair for a second time,” said Trustee Tafoya. “I look forward to another successful year for the Board under the leadership of Trustees Hastey and Kennedy.”

The Yuba Community College District spans eight counties and nearly 4,200 square miles of territory in rural, north-central California. It has colleges in Marysville and Woodland, an educational center in Clearlake, outreach operations at Beale Air Force Base and in Williams, and will be adding an outreach facility in Sutter County as part of the Measure J facilities bond.
