Glenn Medical Center Implements an Electronic Health Record (EHR) System

Glenn Medical Center recently completed the first phase of implementing an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system at their medical facility. Since May 1, 2013 the inpatient hospital, surgery department, emergency department, laboratory, pharmacy, dietary services, and respiratory and physical therapy departments have been using the new EHR system.

By September 1, 2013, the entire Glenn Medical Center system including its clinics will have changed over to the EHR system.

An EHR is a collection of a patient’s health information that encompasses the total health of the patient and is to provide a broad view of the patient’s care. EHRs are designed to share information with other health providers through secure sharing of data, which, in turn, results in a more open communication and involvement on the patient’s part.

When fully functional and exchangeable, the benefits of EHRs offer far more than a paper record can. EHRs:

  • Improve quality and convenience of patient care
  • Increase patient participation in their care
  • Improve accuracy of diagnoses and health outcomes
  • Improve care coordination
  • Increase practice efficiencies and cost savings (www.healthit.gov)

“Glenn Medical Center is focused on providing high quality care and EHR systems have shown to be a great benefit to all involved in the healthcare process” reported Sam Ruma, Glenn Medical Center Administrator.

Glenn Medical Center has been working on the implementation for over a year to ensure that the EHR system they chose was the best and that their staff and infrastructure were prepared. A network infrastructure upgrade was completed at the medical center that created a secure foundation for the EHR to reside on. They chose Computer Program and Systems Inc. (CPSI) as their software provider which is certified with the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC). The ONC is the principal federal entity charged with coordination of nationwide efforts to implement and use the most advanced health information technology and the electronic exchange of health information. The system is set up so every user at the medical center has their own log-in which enables to only have access to the information they need. It also has a built in system audit which shows who is accessing what information and when.

Glenn Medical Center staff and providers are excited about the change and embracing the new technology.

“There are so many benefits to this new program, but my favorite is the patient education piece that has information and diagrams to help explain conditions to patients as well as how to best care for themselves after they leave the hospital” said Karen Borm, R.N.
