Volunteer’s Invited for 2nd Annual Coastal Clean-Up in Colusa

Colusa County’s 2nd annual Coastal Clean-up Day Ecology Walk and Farm Tour is planned for Saturday, September 21.

This year’s event is sponsored by Premier Mushrooms Inc., Steelhead Lodge Bar & Grill, Central Valley Gas Storage, Tommy’s Market Street Grill, Net Impact Sacramento and California Coastal Commission.

Volunteers are encouraged to join in this Colusa County effort as part of the annual statewide Coastal Clean-up Day.

Coastal clean-up day is a statewide event that brings people together from all over California in pursuit of a common goal. That goal is to help clean beaches and inland waterways that are frequently polluted with trash and debris that don’t belong. If left to sit, these effluents can be harmful or even fatal to all types of marine life and can become a hazard to human health. Coastal Cleanup Day is one of California’s largest volunteer events in the world and had 82,500 participants in 2010 who removed a combined total of 1.2 million pounds. That’s the equivalent of roughly 18,341 64-gallon residential garbage bins filled to the top.

Last year community volunteers and Premier Mushrooms Inc. management and staff joined together to clean Colusa’s Greenbelt running along the Sacramento River. The result of this effort was 61.7 lbs. of trash and recyclables being removed from the local ecology.

Premier Mushroom’s sustainability coordinator Kevin Foley is also coordinating this event. If you are interested in joining in contact Foley at kfoley@premiermushrooms.com or by calling (530) 458-2700.

The day’s schedule includes a 10 am tour at Premier Mushrooms. Registration will be at the State Park at 11:30 a.m. with the River Ecology and Nature Walk from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The river clean up will take place from 12:15 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. The day will conclude with a barbecue and prizes between 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
