In recent months Colusa County Supervisor Mark Marshall has hosted out-of-county groups to tour Colusa County businesses.

Most recently he invited staff members from Golden State Risk Management in Willows to tour the California Crawfish Company located at Colusa Industrial Park (CIP).

Marshall also hosted two groups on tours of the Premier Mushroom Inc. facility earlier this year.

Marshall is Safety Officer for Golden State Risk Management.

“I wanted to show groups from outside of the county the progress we are making here in Colusa County,” said Marshall.

“I’m very proud of the success our county’s ag-related businesses are experiencing,” he said.

California Crawfish Company is a start up company buying crawfish trapped in rice fields in the Colusa County area.

The crawfish are sized and shipped live to customers in California, Texas, Louisiana and eventually overseas. Future plans include cooked/frozen product.

The 2013 Harvest is underway.

In addition to the processing facility on the industrial park, with the assistance of CIP the company now has developed a 1 ac. brood pond to finish growing undersized crawfish for a period of 3-4 weeks.

Marshall commented that Premier Mushrooms Inc. is one of the county’s fastest growing ag-related industries and is counted among the county’s largest private sector employers. There are currently 48 growing rooms at the farm, but the estimated November 1, 2013 completion of the farms expansion will increase that number to 64 rooms. This expansion will bring even more year-around jobs to the county.

At Premier Mushrooms the product is composted, grown, processed and distributed.

The composting and pasteurization processes take place in a fully enclosed wharf area, a process which provides several benefits which can be seen in the final product.

Premier encourages the education of youth within our communities and believes we all have an obligation to be stewards of the land. Fresh local food, solid waste reduction and community education are all effective ways of advancing this goal. Because of this belief, they choose to take an active role in the local community. In line with this vision Premier Mushrooms Inc. has adopted a sustainability program of its own and is continually seeking to identify ways to improve it.

“I believe it is important to showcase the ag-related industries we have here in Colusa County,” said Marshall.

“I am impressed with the hard work and dedication these companies have shown in bringing sustainability, marketable products, and growth in our industry base and overall goodwill to our community,” said Marshall.

“I am proud to show them off a little. They will be good role models for other businesses and for other counties.” 
