Setting up shop in Historic Downtown Williams, Alma Lorena’s Salon is set in the historic 1965 Boyes Beauty & Barber. Alma Lorena Fermin-Lemus, owner of Alma Lorena’s salon is embarking on a new venture after working at the former Shear Class salon for the past 10-years.

Having graduated beauty school in 1999, Lemus began working at the J.C. Penny hair Sa-lon in Woodland.

“When I was in cosmetology school, it was everyone’s goal to own your own salon,” said Lemus, “It really was never in my plans, but it happened.”

After working three and a half years at the J.C. Penny Salon, Lemus wanted to be closer to home and began her search.

Lemus found a few openings in Colusa, but the salons just didn’t feel right.

“I didn’t feel at home with the other salons,” said Lemus, “then I joined the team at Shear Class in 2003, it became my family.”

Earlier this year, Shear Class dissolved and many of the hair stylists embarked on futures of their own. Lemus was one of three businesses created out of the closure of the Shear Class salon.

“I was heartbroken,” said Lemus after hearing the news that Shear Class owners, Diana Azevedo and Polly Codorniz were closing the business and starting anew in Colua.

“We had our little family,” said Lemus, “Our family was breaking up, we were all moving on to bigger and better things.”

“Opening my own salon was like when your mother makes you take your medicine,” said Lemus, “you don’t want to take the medicine, but it is good for you.”

With just a few days to setup shop and open her doors, Lemus credits her husband and kids for their support in her new venture.

“My husband spent hours on the weekend, putting all of my equipment and furniture to-gether, “said Lemus, “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my husband.”

Alma Lorena’s Salon is a mix of modern and vintage decor, a huge change from the mod-ern contemporary feel of the previous salon in which her clients were accustomed to.

“I am a person that really doesn’t like change,” said Lemus, “but my clients have been great! Everyone has embraced the new salon and its different atmosphere, we are all adapting to it.”

Lemus shares her space with Connie Shuman a longtime hair stylist in Williams, “She is a great person to work with!” said Lemus.

“It is a different world being on this side of the block,” said Lemus, “There is more foot traffic, and it’s a great place to work.”

Alma Lorena’s Salon provides hair color, highlights, waxing, ear piercings, manicures and pedicures with hot stone massage, facials, and haircuts for men and women.
