Two years ago, Bertha Mondragon set on a new venture opening her salon, First Impressions, in Downtown Colusa.

Located in the Market Place, located at 430 Market Street, Mondragon is joined by longtime friend Martha Silva, providing a variety of salon services to the community.

“After I lost two of my sisters a few years ago, I wanted to quit,” said Mondragon, “but I couldn’t let this dream go.”

For the last 26 years, Mondragon has been working her way through the cosmetology industry.

“Hair has always been something I always wanted to do,” said Mondragon, “ever since I was a little girl it’s been my passion and my therapy at the same time.”

“In beauty school I always thought that someday, maybe I would have my own shop,” said Mondragon.

The name First Impressions came from her Beauty School Teacher, “her business name was First Impressions was, and I loved it so much that I asked her if I could use the name – she agreed,” Mondragon added.

Mondragon credits a significant portion of her experience from the ‘Hair Odyssey’ in Yuba City.

“They were tough,” said Mondragon, “everything I learned was from them, and I learned a lot.”

As a mom, Mondragon wants to be an example for her daughter, “If you really want something and put your mind to it, you can achieve it,” said Mondragon.

“The most rewarding moment in my career is when I was asked to do the hair and makeup for a customer who has passed away,” said Mondragon, “Many people ask ‘how can you do that?’ but for me it’s a very personal way to say goodbye. It’s an honor.”

“I love my work, and I love meeting new people,” said Mondragon, “most of my clients become friends; it’s a very personal business, and I enjoy every minute.”

Specializing in Highlights, Color, Color Correcting, Haircuts and Styles for Men and Women, and Waxing, Mondragon expresses that her passion and art are in Hair Color.

“I would like to thank my clients and friends for the support over the years and for giving me the opportunity to obtain their trust and to be part of their families,” said Mondragon.

New Impressions is available by Appointment Only, Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

To schedule an appointment call: (530) 867-4389.
