Colusa County Moving Forward to Implement County Groundwater Management Plan

At the request of the Colusa County Board of Supervisors, the Colusa County Resource Conservation District, in collaboration with the Colusa County Department of Agriculture has put together a new team in an effort to implement the Colusa County Groundwater Management Plan.

The Colusa County Groundwater Management Plan (GMP) was completed in 2008. Limited county resources have made implementation of the plan slow to get off the ground. The County now has dedicated staff and consultants in place to move this important effort forward.

Colusa County’s goals for groundwater management as written in the GMP, are to: Ensure a reliable water supply, Ensure long-term groundwater sustainability, Optimize conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater, Protect water rights, Maintain local control, and Prevent unnecessary restrictions on groundwater use.

Staff will be working with the Colusa County Groundwater Commission in the coming months to formally appoint a Water Users Group, to form a technical advisory team, and to set a quarterly meeting schedule for the Groundwater Commission. Another priority is to update the County Groundwater Ordinance.

The next Groundwater Commission meeting will be scheduled in late January. All Commission meetings are open to the public.
