Tragedy comes to every community, no matter how big or how small. Here in Colusa County, however, the disappearance of one of our own is worrisome to all of us. To find out our missing lamb was killed and seemingly tossed into a ditch like so much trash…THAT blows our minds and hearts into shattered bits.
Connie “CB” Johnson, the soft spoken, smiling clerk at the Colusa Post Office, was first reported missing, and later, found deceased in a ditch near Colusa. My heart, like so many in our close knit county, has been broken. CB was one of the nicest, sweetest people I’ve ever known. She used to work for my mom, Fay Turner, here in the Williams PO. When I was bartending at Cairo’s, I used to call CB “Cliffy”, because she’d be wearing her little pinstriped PO shirt, sitting at the bar, having a Bud Light. She would always SMILE….she had the greatest smile. And this soft voice….she’d say, reaching across the bar to grasp my hand (she was a “toucher” like me) , “I just love your mother. And your dad. And you and your sister. I just love your whole family.” Smiling that sweet smile. Who could possibly want to hurt her? What could have happened? SMDH!….(shaking my dang head, for those not versed in “tweeterisms”)…..I am sad and I am angry.
By the time this comes to print, I’m sure we will have some answers. Rumors already abound on this miserable, windy Friday. But all the answers? I doubt there are words enough. Tonight, hug your kids a little tighter. Call your parents, siblings and friends. Tell them how much they are loved and appreciated. Forgive those who have hurt you, and apologize to those you have hurt. Because even here, in the safety of our small, rural community, life is as fragile as it is miraculous. And it can be snatched away in an instant, whether by another’s violent hands, a sleepy truck driver in the wrong lane, or any other myriad of reasons. Like the song says, tell them that you love them “in the living years”.
God bless you and keep you CB. Heaven is a better place, but this Earth shines a little less brightly..C
